The LA Galaxy midfielder was named Man of the Match despite featuring for just more than 30 minutes in the second half as England ran out 3-0 winners against Belarus at Wembley on Wednesday.

The result was more pleasing than the performance, but the record of nine wins from 10 qualifying games will surely please manager Fabio Capello.

The Italian admitted he was surprised with Beckham's Man of the Match award but, with the 34-year-old close to completing a loan move to AC Milan at the end of the year, the former England captain's determination to be picked for South Africa cannot be questioned.

"Am I on target for a World Cupspot? There is a long time to go, a lot of games to play, a lot of the season left," he said.

"We will see. I'll carry on working hard, playing as hard as I can and just to give myself a chance.

"If I'm in the squad, then great, and if not, then we've got a strong squad of players that can go to Africa and make it interesting.

"We all have to prove ourselves every game and every training session that we want to be in the squad and in the team for every game and not just the World Cup."
