Taekwondo aces win Gold for Tower Hamlets

Tower Hamlets based Martial Arts club Hadri Taekwondo have struck gold after an elite team of 14 stormed the national championships at Bournemouth. 

The annual fighting festival was jampacked with 300 of the United Kingdom's elite competitors. 

The Hadri Taekwondo squad, made up of a variety of ages, ranging from 8 years to senior adults competed under the watchful eye of trainer Master Esrar. True to form brilliant Hadri bagged a magnificent 5 golds, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals. 

The squad returned to an overjoyed borough, where a celebratory reception was held at their training base at the Bishop Challoner School in Shadwell, east London. 

Principal guest at the event was Respect Councillor and party leader Abjol Miah, himself a much experienced exponent of the martial arts. 

Also in attendance was Shadwell Councillor Harun Miah to also participate in the medal ceremony. 

"This is a fantastic achievement," said Councillor Miah. "I am delighted to witness so many young people participating in this sport. 

"This is an activity which promotes health and self-discipline without injury and I am extremely proud to be handing out thesewell earned medals. 

"Martial Arts are under-promoted in Britain, but we may very well be looking at future Olympic champions here as this is an Olympics sport and will be included in the 2012 Olympics."

Councillor Miah went on to say how encouraged he was to see the number of women and girls now participating in the sport. It was pointed out that the the club had seen the graduation of the first batch of female instructors

As a Martial Artist and the Respect parties prospective parliamentary candidate for Bethnal Green and Bow, Councillor Miah, who participated in the Worls stick fighting championships in the Philippines for Great Britain in 1994, and winning both Silver and Bronze medals in the British Championships, has pledged to promote the sport up and down the country if elected.
